Jack A. McDonald

Steve was my next door neighbor.  We were close friends from the age of 5 until the end of high school.  Sherman Elementary, Evergreen Jr. High, and then Skyline.  We often walked - yes walked - to Sherman and Evergreen together.  When we were 6 years old we were riding our wagons down Fisher Lane to the Ballsteads home.  I decided to cross the street but a truck was coming.  Steve said "don't worry, you will make it."  I remember waking up a after being hit and dragged by the truck a hundred yards.  Steve was right, I made it, the truck didn't kill me.  Steve called me one day and said that he wanted a nickname.  He chose :"Zeke" I don't know why.  I admired his talent playing his Goya guitar and his banjo.  We didn't communicate a lot after High school.  A few years before Zeke died I reconnected and was glad we could talk on the phone every few months.  Steve shared with me a lot of his regrets.  I reminded him that it is ok to look in the past - just don't stare!  Miss you Zeke.

Harold (Skip) Chase

Steve was a friend of my youth.  I remember similarly the words of Jack McDonald.  Steve was his neighbor, but was also kind and good to others.  I do remember his goodness to me.  Thanks Steve for your goodness to me and that which you gave to me.  Sincerely, Skip Chase
