Steve Evans

Steven Carlyle Evans
Steven Carlyle Evans "Poppie" 1947 ~ 2004  Our wonderful, beloved, quirky husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend Steven Carlyle Evans lost his battle with earthly pain on August 18, 2004.  He was born October 1, 1947 in Salt Lake City to Elden and Elaine (Walker) Evans. Steve was an outstanding athlete at Skyline High School, graduating in 1966. He played football and baseball at the University of Utah where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He married the beautiful Trudy Parker on July 16, 1969 and immediately left for a tour of duty in Vietnam for the US Navy that prevented him from pursuing a professional baseball career. Steve returned home to Trudy and began a successful and varied career in real estate where he was an original member of the Million Dollar Club. Steve is survived by his loving, loyal wife, daughters Whitney Shingleton (Robert) and Jamie Barth (Steve) who will continue his memory. Grandkids Hailey, Jordyn, Jacob, Jessy and Mary will always remember their jovial jokester, cookie maker, ball player Poppie as a wonderful man. He loved his grandkids and lived as an example and teacher to them. He is also survived by his father, sisters Janeen Brazier, Shawna Eames (Bob), and brother Michael, mother-in-law Edna Parker and scores of nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his mother and niece whom he loved. Through personal and professional relationships, Steve mentored and touched the lives of those who knew him. He will be remembered as kind, generous, fun-loving, proud and the world's biggest tease; an adventuresome outdoors man, avid fly fisherman, gardener and tremendous all-around athlete. He excelled in everything and especially loved playing squash. Funeral services will be Monday, 2:00 p.m., Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 S. in Salt Lake. Visitation will be Sun. evening 6-8 for friends and family to join, tell stories and celebrate Steve's life. Lies, embellishments, tears and laughs are required. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Christmas Box Foundation or a children's charity of your choice. "Poppie, we love you. Have fun  playing squash, fielding the ball  and landing a hog."

I miss Steve.  I enjoyed our yearly phone calls up until his death.  He dealt with the terrible pain from the disease with such courage.  He was always positive and made me feel better each time we spoke.  Such a good man!

I first met Steve when he sat behind me in Mrs. Andertons 4th grade class at Morningside elementary.  He had a big smile, freckles, and an amazing head of light blonde hair.  I had the pleasure of getting to talk to him in the early 90s.  He had the same humor and great personality that I remembered as a young man.  I was saddened to hear of his passing.

School Story and In Memory comment:

When we were sophomores, my Bill and Steve Evans wanted to go on a double date to one of the cool James Bond movies --- but Steve didn't have a date.  "No way," I said, for whatever strange reason, "will I go on a double date with two guys and no other girl."  So Steve said OK - he would get a date.  That night when they picked me up, Steve's date was sitting next to him in the front seat of his car.  He introduced her.  Her name was Teddi - from Highland High School.  She had a scarf on her very bouffant hairdo.  She didn't say much or even turn around to say hi.  Steve said she was very shy, but he did talk to her almost continuously while he was driving.  So we get to the movie house and Steve rushes around to open the car door for Teddi - that big grin on his face.  He helps her out of the car, and --- Seriously?!!  She's a big ole stuffed teddy bear with a scarf on its head!  Well no way, I said.  A double date is a double date. I made Steve buy ole teddy a ticket to the movie.  Teddy had to sit next to him in the theater through the whole show.  And afterwards, he had to buy teddy a sundae at Fernwoods.  Yeah, Steve was always a tease, and this night he was the best sport ever.

Steve Evans was my best friend, and I miss him as much today as I did when he died.  We were together continually during high school and a few years after.  Even when we were thousands of miles apart and when years would pass without seeing one another, the bond of friendship remained strong.  I saw Steve for the last time a week before he passed.  We were at my Mother’s Grave Side Service.  As we prepared to leave, Steve came up to me and kissed me on the cheek.  At the time, I thought this was very odd behavior.  I know now, it was his way of saying goodbye.  How I wish, that instead, he had said he needed to talk.
