Melanie Richards Metz - July 7, 1948 - July 26, 1997

Melanie was born July 7, 1948 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Beverly Beesley Richards and Foley Caldwell Richards. She grew up in Salt Lake with brothers Jonothan W. and David F Richards. A third brother, Daniel Thomas Richards died in infancy. Melanie died on July 26, 1997 in Ft. Collins, Colorado. 

She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority while she attended the University of Utah from 1966 to 1970, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree specializing in Graphic Design. She moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado in 1975, establishing herself in the art community working for Bob Coontz Design. In 1980, she established her own Graphic Design business and operated out of her "Old Town" office up to the present. 

Melanie married Larry S. Metz in 1980, also from the University of Utah. Their son Thomas Samuel was born in 1984. 

She remained active in the art community up to the present day. She was a member of the "Marketing and Advertising Club" and won local and national awards for excellence in Graphic Design. 

Melanie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a teacher in both Primary and Relief Society, served as a visiting teacher and participated in various other church-related activities. 

Melanie taught Graphic design at CSU for several semesters, bringing a sense of the commercial world to her students. 

Melanie will be remembered for her vivacious spirit, which she brought to all of her endeavors; for her thoughtfulness, kindness and loyalty towards friends and family; for her courageous and optimistic approach to life. 

She is survived by her husband Larry, her son Thomas, her parents Beverly and Foley Richards, her brother Dave and her brother Jon Richards and wife Gail, children Grace and Cooper. 

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 31 in Ft. Collins, Colorado. 

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 2, 1997 at 11:30 a.m. Friends may visit the family on Saturday from 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive. If friends wish, memorial gifts may be made to the Colorado State University Foundation (c/o 650 W. Drake, Ft. Collins, CO 80526) where a scholarship fund has been established.

I miss Melanie.  I kept in touch with her through the years.  I visited her in Fort Collins and visited with her as she fought breast cancer.  We had so many laughs together, as she had such a great sense of humor and a good listening ear.  She was such a vibrant girl.  If I remember correctly, she asked for the lining of her casket to be red.
