Edward Allan "Tim" Hunter, Jr.

Sept. 5, 1948 - April 12, 2014

Edward Allan "Tim" Hunter, Jr. was born September 5, 1948 to Edward Allan and Helen Spindler Hunter.

He graduated from Skyline High School in 1966.

Tim married Carol Lyn Schnorenberg March 20, 1984.

He passed away April 12, 2014 in Salt Lake City, and is buried at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

The following letter was written by Tim's wife at the time of his passing:

To our dear family members, friends and colleagues,

After valiantly fighting to stave off cancer for over two and a half years, Tim passed away in our arms shortly after midnight Saturday.  There are no words to express our sadness at the loss of this amazingly gentle and loving man.

While a profoundly private person, Tim treasured his time with his friends and family.  He loved to share his passion for reading, history, debate, travel and sports.

His love of reading started at a very early age.  As a child he loved everything from Dickens to Tolstoy, often choosing to stay in and read when he could be outside playing.  When he would go missing for too long, his mother would find him curled up with a book in the many nooks and crannies in their home. His passion for the written word only grew with time and he made sure that he shared that love with his friends and family.

Family vacations were never just about relaxing.  Whether climbing up the Tower of London or down into the depths of the Great Pyramid of Giza, Tim always made sure that we understood the historical and cultural importance of what we were seeing. Much to our chagrin, this meant the occasional trip to Gettysburg or Bosworth in which Tim seemed to be the only one to truly grasp the importance of a field. However, as Lindsay and I can attest, Tim was the best tour guide no matter where we went.

Another of his passions was debating. While an amazing litigator in the courtroom, Tim enjoyed nothing more than debating random topics with Lindsay. Having trained Lindsay from an early age to defend her positions with passion, their nightly phone calls were regularly resolved only when one admitted defeat.  To ensure he was in a position to support and challenge her thinking, he would often read the textbooks she was required to study while in college.

Tim was a committed University of Utah alumnus and we began taking Lindsay to basketball and football games when she was only two. His commitment and love for the institution increased when Lindsay was admitted to the University of Utah Medical School in 2012.

All this being said, it was his love that gave Lindsay and I the confidence to undertake challenges, knowing that whether we succeeded or failed Tim would be proud of us. He was extraordinarily protective of his family. Over the last two and a half years, he bore unbelievable pain with a smile and a gentle touch in order to spare us, his mother, brother and our extended families.  There are no words to describe the incredible sorrow and void we feel; it is only surpassed by the joy, commitment, and love Tim managed to bring into all aspects of our lives.

We would like to thank you all for the love and support you have given us.  We also want to thank Doctor Ross Morgan, his staff and the medical professionals of Intermountain Healthcare for the care they provided Tim.

Please join our family in celebrating Tim’s life at a graveside serve at 1 pm on Saturday, April 19 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park 3401 S Highland Dr, Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers we would ask you please send donations to University of Utah School of Medicine Student Emergency Fund at
