James G. Winder

May 30, 1948 - January 1, 2002

"JIM"

James Gronau (Jim) Winder, 53, died peacefully early January 1, 2002 at his home in Murray surrounded by loved ones. Five and a half years ago, Jim began an incredible journey when he was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer, and was given six months to live. Daring surgeries gave Jim time to explore different forms of therapy and treatment-the macrobiotic philosophy, breathing therapy, positive mental imaging, and others. But it was Jim's astounding courage, will to live, and unshakable faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ that kept him victorious over this form of cancer that does not respond to chemotherapy or radiation. He bore his burden with amazing dignity and optimism and shared his hope and knowledge about alternative treatments with other cancer patients. His determination has been heart lifting and faith promoting to a great number of people.

Jim was born May 30, 1948, in Salt Lake City to John R. (Jack) and Lucile Espenschied Winder. He attended Olympus High and the U of U. He married Carol Rogers Aug. 27, 1971. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in January of 1973. Jim was an active member of his LDS ward, especially enjoying the couple's calling as stake missionaries.

As a youth he was a valuable player in both Little League baseball and football. Later, he became an avid bow and rifle hunter--but nothing matched his love for golf, at which he excelled. Jim made his career in retail sales, learning the craft at Bud's Duds, Keith O'Brien, Nordstrom, and ZCMI (downtown and Cottonwood). He managed the men's suit department at ZCMI downtown where he developed a large personal clientele, and was well known for his fitting expertise and exceptional customer service. He took particular pride in having outfitted nearly 2,000 LDS missionaries.

Survivors include his loving wife Carol and son Scott, Murray; daughters Jill (New York), and Julie (Nicholas) Hundley, Provo; father and step-mother Laura, and sister Beth, all of Salt Lake; brother Elder Robert Winder, Kentucky Louisville Mission; and sister-in-law Jennifer Leonard, Bosie, ID. Also by Carol's sisters and brother: Glenna (Don) Anderson, West Valley City; Marilynn (Paul) Gardner, Riverton; Gary (RaFawn) Rogers, Lehi; Margaret (Brent) Gurney, American Fork; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and loving friends. Preceded in death by mother and brother Tom.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at the Brownstone Chapel, 6410 South. 725 East. Friends may call Friday, Jan. 4, from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Murray Little Cottonwood 8th Ward, 6180 South Glenoaks St., and at the Brownstone one hour prior to services. Interment in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park under direction of Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, Jim requested that contributions be made to the Cancer Wellness House, 59 South 1100 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84102.

I met Jim when we were sophomores at Skyline and we became friends.  I think he actually attended Olympus his junior and senior years and then I lost track of him.  In October of 1979 as I was beginning my real estate career we got reaquainted at Cambridge Realty which was located on 3300 South.  After about 17 months I started Ensign Investments Real Estate(he actually suggested the company name) and went out on my own and he followed me and and we became very good friends as we worked together.  He was kind and very loyal and we sold real estate for a couple of years together as the real estate market slid into the tank.  He eventually went to work for ZCMI selling men's clothing in their downtown store and was very successful with hundreds of loyal clients with whom he had a special rapport.  He later moved to the ZCMI Cottonwood Mall store and made many loyal friends there also. He contracted cancer in about 1998 and fought a courageous fight while continuing to work and play golf and build friendships with everyone he met.  Several of his friends took a golf trip to Southern California and played several very picturesque golf courses along the Pacific Ocean in his last few months.  He truly endured to the end and died on January 1st, 2002.  He was a wonderful friend and I still think of him.
