Charles William (Bill) Newkirk

September 14, 1947 - July 25, 1999

Charles William "Bill" Newkirk, 51, of Axtell, Utah, died July 25, 1999, in Fishlake, Utah.

He was born September 14, 1947, in St. Paul, Minnesota to William and Margaret Newkirk. He married Carrie Gay Brown.

Bill served in the Vietnam War (3 voluntary tours with the 82nd Airborne Special Forces Unit), and was decorated with many military honors including the National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, one Silver Star, three Bronze Stars, Parachute Badge, three Purple Hearts, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Badge in the following: M-16, .45 Caliber pistol, .38 Caliber pistol. He was a prisoner of war and a Military Policeman.

During a period of 30 years, Bill was a law enforcement officer for West Valley City and Sandy City before becoming a Lieutenant with the Utah Department of Corrections. Bill founded the Green Thumb Program in 1988. He was a leader in Gang Research. Bill took a medical retirement in 1995.

He is very well loved and will be missed by all. Bill is survived by his wife, Carrie, Axtell, UT; children, Kimberly Earl, Magna, UT; Richard Newkirk, St. George, UT; Kevin Newkirk, West Valley City, UT; and Erin Newkirk, Axtell, UT; eight grandchildren. Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, July 29, 1999 at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park, in Bluffdale.
