My memories of Bart will always be his laugh, his smile, and how he loved to push the boundaries at school.

Memories of Bart Carlos, an awesome friend - Bob Sexton

My most vivid memory of Bart from Skyline was during football practice one afternoon when Coach Linford was riding him pretty hard.  Coach Linford yelled at Bart, "Carlos, with legs like that you ought to be quick as a cat!" - the guy had a way with words.

In the summer of '67, after a year at Utah State for Bart and a year at the U for me, we ended up in Bart's pool on Jupiter Dr/Fortuna Way with some of our buddies having a few beers and yucking it up.  We had learned that Gene Salazar and Don Williamson enlisted in the Marine Corps and decided it sounded like a good idea.  After that day, we remained bonded in heart and spirit until his death.  Before we left for boot camp we capped off our summer by taking a road trip in Bart's TR3.  What a blast.  We met my parents and grandparents at the Stardust in Vegas for dinner along our way and got silly on huge community cocktails, trying our best to pinch off each others' straws.  Later on, we looped north and ended up in Boise where my aunt and uncle put us up for the night and fed us.  It was a great adventure for Bart and me and one I will always remember.

In the winter of '69/'70 after the Marines, Bart and I were floundering around SLC wondering what came next.  Apparently, neither of us had managed to map out our lives early on.  Bart mentioned that his brother, Craig, was living in San Francisco and we decided to leave Utah and move to San Fran.  We rented an apartment in Craig's building, on the corner of of Post and Larkin in the city, and set up housekeeping complete with cinderblock and plywood shelves, bean bag furniture and rock n' roll posters covering the wall.  We had missed the heyday of Haight-Ashbury, but did manage to join a couple of rallies across the bay at UC Berkeley to protest the war, the unfair treatment of the Chicago 7, and the bondage of the "Fort Ord 40,000".  We walked or bussed most everywhere.  Somewhere along the way Bart came up with a pathetic Ford Falcon which we systematically destroyed.

We goofed around for over a year when one day my future ex-wife showed up at my workplace (East West Musical Instruments Company), after hearing it was a good place to find somewhere to "crash" for a couple of days.  A few months later, I was headed back to Utah (after stopping in Reno and getting married) with Lynette.  Bart remained in California, following Craig into various ventures including working in galleries, buying and selling art, motivational speaking, and "talking time" - time share sales.  His attributes of sincerity and humor served him well in his business career.

Bart migrated to SoCal, north of San Diego, in the Del Mar/Encinitas/Carlsbad/Oceanside area.  He bought a small sailboat and started sailing.  There, Bart met his soulmate, Gretchen, and they were married.  They enjoyed an amazing life together, sailing and playing golf.  Gretchen was an accomplished sailor and Bart honed his own sailing skills during their years together.  They summered their sailboat near Oceanside and wintered it in Puerta Vallarta MX, exploring the beautiful Sea of Cortez together.  I know that his time with Gretchen was the happiest of Bart's life.

Other than Gretchen, I believe the two great loves of Bart's life were his mom, Annette, and his little sister, Annie.  His loyalty and regard for them was unquestionable. Bart was always protective of his family and friends.

Despite some lapses staying in touch with Bart over the years, I have always counted him as one of my dearest friends.  He was truly one of the most thoughtful and genuine people I have known.  Whenever we crossed paths, it was as though no time had passed and we always seemed to pick up where we left off, enjoying each other's companionship and wit.

Sadly, Bart was taken out of the game by cancer much too early.

I knew Bart during our time at Skyline.  I really got to know him while we were stationed together at Danang guarding the ammo dump.  I didn't know a bunch of the guys from school had joined the Marines.

It was a very pleasant surprise running into Bart, because up until that time I was pretty much a lost soul on my way out.  I had just checked in to the command for a temporary duty assignment after being in the boonies for over 8 month.  I had my hooch assignment, and as I was walking there to store my gear I heard a person behind me yell, hey Lance what the **** are you doing here.  It was Bart, wow my morale went thru the roof.  It was so great to see a friendly face through the sea of green.

Life was good after that, well as good as it could be considering where we were.  Bart looked after me because my big mouth always got me in trouble.  Bart was as tough a Marines as you could ask for, he never took any crap off anyone.

I remember standing tower duty with Bart , him in one tower and me and another Marine in another tower when about one in the morning all hell breaks lose from all the towers.  With machine gun and small arms fire, grenades being tossed into the wire, for about 5 minutes, which seemed like hours.  After the firing stopped it appeared a mongoose had set off a trip flare.  Well guess who got to repair the wire after we shot the crap out of it.  You guessed it.  I don't remember seeing Gene while I was in country.  I know he was in Danang somwhere, because Bart talked about him all the time.

I remember Bart taught me how to play back alley bridge, which was what we did whenever we had time off.  We played for hours and talked about home and family and friends.  Having Bart around made life in Vietnam less stressful.

Bart was never the same after we found out that Don was killed in action.  Bart helped me through some tough times, well we helped each other.  After my temporary duty was over I left Danang.  I never saw Bart again.  I always regreted not looking him up to this day.

Rest in peace brother

Bartlie Heber "Bart" Carlos

April 21, 1948 - February 19, 2009

Bartlie Heber "Bart" Carlos was born April 21, 1948 to Lucy Annette Cardon and Jean Bank Carlos.  He graduated from Skyline High School in 1966,  where he was known for his humor, charisma, and athleticism.  Bart joined the United States Marine Corps and served his county during the Viet Nam War.  After military service, Bart resumed his studies at Utah State, from which he graduated.

Bart moved to San Diego, and while taking sailing lessons in 1995, he met Gretchen, whom he married in 2000.  Bart and Gretchen started their married lives on a 45-foot sailboat, docking between Oceanside, CA and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  Eventually, the two decided to sail around the world.  They reached Tahiti, but Gretchen suffered an accident, and the two could not continue their quest to round the globe.  The couple returned to Oceanside, sold their boat and moved to Goodyear, AZ, where Bart's brother, Craig, resided.

In his professional career, Bart sold time shares, and eventually became a motivational speaker.

Bart passed away February 19, 2009, shortly after he and Gretchen moved to Arizona.

Bart is survived by his wife; his brother, J. Craig (Annabella) Carlos; and his sister, Ann Carlos (Greg) Link.

Biographical information provided by Bart's lifelong friend, Mike Littlefield.

What great tributes to a great guy.  I will never forget throwing a party at my house during our senior year when my parents were out of town and Bart coming in from the garage with a whole frozen chicken wanting to know where the barbque was.  He was always making people laugh.

Rest in peace good friend.
