We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Steve Crane, one of VCBO’s founding partners and a valued member of our architectural community.
An imaginative, big-picture thinker, Steve was instrumental in establishing VCBO’s K–12 education practice, which has since become one of the firm’s most impactful and award-winning areas of work. His passion for pro bono service also helped instill a culture of meaningful, human-centered design that continues to guide VCBO.
Beyond his professional contributions, Steve was known for his warmth, wit, and generosity of spirit. He never met a stranger, always bringing joy and friendship to those around him. His legacy will continue to influence our profession and the lives of those he touched.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Steve’s family, friends, and colleagues. He and his sweater collection will be greatly missed.
A memorial service for Steve will be held October 9, from 6-8 p.m. at VCBO Architecture, 524 South 600 East, SLC, UT 84102. https://starksfuneral.com/obituary/steven-harold-crane/?utm_source=MarketingCloud&utm_term=%%%3dRedirectTo(%40ObituaryUrl)%3d%%&utm_content=404460&utm

Steve and I were best of friends toward the end of our high school years. When my mother passed away and my Dad remarried and moved to Alpine, UT, Steve and his mother invited me to move in with the family so I could finish my senior year at Skyline as cheerleader and with friends, rather than begin a new high school experience in American Fork. Steve and his mother and sister were my second family, and graciously made me most welcome in their home always. Steve and I also shared a passion for our red Ford Mustangs our senior year, often washing and waxing them together.
Steve was always exhuberant, optimistic, outgoing, friendly, and a loyal friend. He was the kind of friend that will be missed by everyone who were blessed to know him. God bless you and your family Steve. I know you are in a better place, and know you will always be remembered with that enthusiastic infectious smile.
