How time flies. I knew Joel, from the 2nd grade till graduation, we all lived on the same street.  Dan Densley, Brent Erickson, Gordon Allred, Joe Sanders, Greg Shelby are just some of the friends who all spent many days playing basketball, football, baseball and enjoying and complaining about life together for many years. Those were some great times! I haven't seen Joel since Skyline. Everyones lives went in different directions. Many times ,while rock climbing, memories of experiences Joel and had together while climbing and hiking  come to mind. Now as I write this, the floodgate of memories has opened and I am truely sad at the passing of this old friend, yet, I am glad to had the opportunity to have shared a part of my life with him. "OFF BELAY" Joel ! I'll miss you.  Lenny!!!!!

Thanks, Lenny, for your thought provoking comments about our shared experiences growing up on or near 3165 East. I had not heard of Joel's passing until I read your comments. They brought back a flood of memories from as early as 1955 when my family moved into the neighborhood. One thing I recall vividly is Joel, his brother, Scott, and his dad going deer hunting. They invited me to go with them one time. They were successful in harvesting a deer and I was able to share in Joel's and Scott's excitement with their dad when we found the deer. However, I was not prepared for what happened next; preparing the deer for transporting to their truck. Well, that story is for another time.

As young boys full of energy, we would play like we were either hunters or deer running around hiding in bushes, so we wouldn't be "shot" by the hunters. We were a neighborhood full of boys who loved sports, as Lenny pointed out. I recall we had enough young boys our age or within a year or two older or younger, to fill a baseball team and a football team. We lived near a gully where the mostly dry creek bed that came from Neff's Canyon just north of Mt Olympus ran. We spent countless hours exploring the sand hills, oak brush and sage brush looking for lizards, and any other rodents or animals we could scare up.

Thanks again for stirring the memory of my early childhood. Joel was a good friend in my young years and I am sorry to hear of his passing.
