THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR A WONDERFUL 50^TH REUNION

It was great seeing so many of you last Thursday and Saturday night at the 50^th Reunion. And to all of you who were not able to come, know that each of you were missed. I hope you don’t mind that we talked about you in your absence.  And we did talk a whole lot on both Thursday and Saturday nights and during a number of smaller gatherings held before, after and in between.  We talked about everybody and everything that happened at Skyline way back in 1963-66 and all the things we have experienced since then right up to the present day.

About 250 people came Thursday evening to the mix and mingle in the courtyard at Skyline High.  Many of us did not even make it to the courtyard before we were exchanging hugs and memories. We hung out around the semi-circle drive just west of the parking lot admiring Brent Hoge’s 1966 Plymouth convertible. Once in the courtyard, the past fifty years seemed to melt away. Even if we were showing a few mild signs of aging ourselves, the school looked pretty much the same. We formed a broad circle in the middle of the courtyard that was in constant motion as small clusters of people formed up, talked for a few minutes, then split up to seek out new clusters of old classmates.  As the night drew on and more people showed up, our circle expanded to take in the new arrivals. While it was great being able to chat with old friends, it was equally fun talking to people we hardly knew in high school and listening to all their great memories and sad travails. There were so many embraces with old friends, welcoming smiles, handshakes and pats on the back - - even a few pecks on the cheek. Ted Nelson made up poster boards with photos and names of all of our deceased classmates and displayed them around the courtyard. It is hard to believe that over 90 of our classmates (nearly 12% of our graduating class) have already passed on. Clive Romney sang a song, “Soar with the Eagles”, that he had composed especially for the reunion. Kaye Summerhays harmonized with him on the chorus. Clive followed with a rendition of James Taylor’s “You’ve Got a Friend.”  We stayed on late into the evening and kept Skyline’s janitors up past their bedtime. Thanks to Jerri Jespersen-Vigos, Shannon Caldwell and Jeff Bridge for the cookies and bottled water.

At last count, 222 attended the Saturday night dinner at the Cottonwood Country Club. Dave Ekins parked his 1966 Buick GS 455 muscle machine right outside the front door.  Dean Manos and his wife put together all of the table and other decorations for the evening and the place looked great with blue and gold balloons everywhere. The large banquet room accommodated all of us comfortably and looked out over a wide deck that spanned the length of the room and overlooked a small lake.  We quickly rejoined the conversations of Thursday evening and sought out the many classmates we had failed to get around to during the prior evening at Skyline. Again the mood was amazingly warm and friendly with laughter frequently punctuating the non-stop banter.  Following dinner, Carol Callister Wallace and Marci Ence Barlow kept us guessing with a trivia quiz that included questions like:  What was surprising about the 3-game basketball games Skyline played against Olympus in 1966? (Answer: Skyline lost all three games), Which of our classmates flew the last US plane load of refugees out of Saigon in April 1975 and was later president of Dixie College? (Answer: Lee Caldwell), Which of our classmates was the vocalist for the band The Invaders that opened for rock concerts at Lagoon like Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits and the Everly Brothers? (Answer: Lynda Pinder), and Which of our classmates is a research professor at UC Davis and Research VP in Dept. of Neurological Surgery?  Answer: Bob Berman.  Peter Cairo than kept us laughing and amazed with our classmates’ responses to the survey questions Peter posted on the class website.  Then we watched the video that Clive Romney and Tom Bock put together about many of the highlights (and a few of the lowlights) of our years at Skyline.  The video concluded with photos of our 90 classmates that have died since we entered Skyline in 1963. Mike Littlefield put together a great selection of 60's music that played in the background during the Saturday night dinner. Thanks Mike.

Steve Ford spent hours taking photos of many of us at the reunion and we plan to post many of those shots on the website in the coming days.  If any of you took your own photos and would like to share with the rest of us, please post them (together with the names of the people in them - - if you can remember who they were) on the website.

Again, many thanks to all of you that made our 50^th class reunion possible and to the many who traveled great distances to gather together again after all these years to share memories of those times spent at Skyline High, to exchange stories about our amazingly varied lives since, and to renew the ties that bind us still.

We plan to keep the website up over the coming years. It has been fun reading about all of your exploits.  So, continue to post your comments and share your stories, photos and videos on the website.  Keep in mind that you can use the website to send emails to one another and leave comments on each other’s pages.  And if you move or change your address, telephone number or email account, please update your contact information on the website so we don’t lose track of you.
